Momofuku Noodle Bar

About
I just love this place, even though it's more expensive than you think when you start ordering. It's basically a noodle bar but the ingredients are supreme - Berkshire pork, the current must on every New York menu, unctuous noodles and great broths. My favorite bowl is actually kimchi stew that has no noodles in it.

Don't miss the plate of homemade pickles that change around daily. Tiny carrots, spicy daikon, shreded celery root, thinly sliced shitake and pickled pear slices were on my plate last I was there. Then you have to have the steamed buns, either shitake or pork with hoisin. Stunning.

They serve beer and sake and everything I've eaten there is something I end up craving a couple of weeks later. The place is dangerous - you think you're in for a bowl of noodles and you end up spending $40. But it's kinda worth it.

I wrote this suggestion and just want to continue fawning...also try the "rice cakes" which are sort of like gummy rice sausages in spicy sauce. Incredible.

When I first went to Momofuko before Food and Wine featured it two months in a row and Time Out mentioned it as well as New York magazine the Kimchi stew DID have noodles in it. It had glass noodles and was also served with rice. It has since changed. When I ordered it the other night I have to admit I was slightly disappointed - see I love the actual broth in the thing and could do without all of the pork. Without something startchy to soak up the sassy flavor-I dont know, I felt like it was missing something.

Momofuko stands well among the East Village favorites. I really like the chicken and egg. The chicken is very tender and a little salty. I recommend sitting at the bar facing the kitchen if you want to learn how to poach an egg.
