Cafe Gitane
#122
About
Hubert Darieux (Claude Brasseur), an insignificant provincial banker, has become an innocent victim of a female gang that is making his life hell. His car is stolen. It is recovered by the police with a clandestine passenger, Mona (Valerie Kaprisky), une gitane – a gypsy.

Whether this 1985 De Broca French comedy "La Gitane", Richepin's drama of the same name, or Toulouse Lautrec's rarest poster that announced it, a gypsy woman is positively the inspiration behind the Nolita old time favorite. The attraction to her must be overwhelmingly consuming.

The small restaurant is a popular attraction of visitors and New Yorkers alike. You will usually have to wait for a table as it is full most times of day. Café Gitane adapts instantly in gloomy and sunny weather alike – a warm coffee spot turns into an outdoor hangout to watch fashionistas stroll by.

Finally, the food is strongly Moroccan and the attitude of the pretty waitresses is distractedly gypsy. Both the couscous and the baked feta with olives are remarkable. But my all time favorite remain the spicy meatballs, bathing in deliciously rich tomato sauce and an egg.
