Any Green Thumbs Out There?

I live in Harlem, New York. My building has a terrace, and that terrace has become my green acres. Not only does this garden provide herbs like sage basil, and oregano, peppers, tomatoes, collard greens, and broccoli but it provides a little piece of the country among the concrete and steel of the city. I can sit and unwind with a nice glass of my favorite drink and forget for a moment the grind. As far as locations go, it's not so bad. From were I work on my terrace, I can see the Adam Clayton Powell Building where President Clinton's Harlem office is located. If there are any green thumbs out there -- any gardening suggestions, hints, or age-old secrets you can share?
