Foodogenic Candy had her corn removed and she's now feeling more like walking. Through Chinatown on Manhattan Island. East on Canal Street towards the Manhattan Bridge, you can barely hear your friend next to you talking over the din. Every few steps the smells switch from putrid to delectable to Italian and back. The streets are so packed even an avid city walker gets exasperated within a half-block. If you keep going straight and turn right into the little side streets next to, under and around the bridge, the outdoor fish markets and produce stands and knickknack boutiques are so foreign to most of us, you wonder how you got there without a passport.
I've been going to Chinatown since 1972 and not much has changed in 34 years. My fondest memory has always been what I thought as a kid was "freaky food." The fruits and vegetables I couldn't name or think of a use for and the animal and fish parts I couldn't even fathom. I found myself nostalgic for the unfamiliar.
But this time, I took my camera. As a native New Yorker, taking pictures in the city like a tourist is tantamount to streaking at your office Christmas party — it's just bad form. But the images were worth a confrontation with my indigenous pride. Now, all I have to do is figure out what these things are called and what they're used for…
Which is where you come in. Last month I served up a visual guessing game (and am still eagerly awaiting your guesses ... hint, hint). This month, we're playing "Name That Ingredient"! If you know anything about the edibles in these photos, Foodogenic Candy is all ears. Post it all below.
Until next year, fellow Foodies. Peas out.
